We are so excited to bring you all to KARACHI! This is the ultimate STREET FOOD destination in PAKISTAN! Today, we are bringing you on a HUGE food tour of Karachi. Make sure you are hungry and watch until the end, we have so much food to share with you!
Empress Market: We started our day at Karachi’s oldest market. This place has a turbulent history, but is currently lively and bustling. The air was filled with smells of local spices, dried fruits and nuts. We explored this vibrant market, and bought lots of different spices to bring home: coriander, turmeric, cardamom, tikka masala, biryani masala, and karahi masala among many other spices.
Karachi Biryani: There is an ongoing debate between many foodies, which is “what city has the best biryani in the world?”. We have to give it up to Karachi for serving the best we’ve ever tasted. Karachi’s style biryani is rich, spicy, full of flavour and served with beef. This beef biryani from Allah Wala Biryani is super delicious!
Bun Kabab: One of Karachi’s most-famous street foods is the bun kabab. There are a few variations you can order, but we ordered the daal anda bun kabab. The “burger” is made up of a daal patty, fried egg, tomatoes, lettuce, onion and herbs. It is served with a sour and spicy chutney. We tried the bun kabab from Nursery Super Burger (نرسری سپر برگر), and it was amazing!
Clifton Beach: We were stuffed from breakfast, so it was time to head across Karachi to visit Clifton Beach/Sea View (کلفٹن ساحل). Popular among locals and tourists alike, this beach spans far along the coast. For several reasons including a strong current, it is not a beach to swim at. Instead, you can find tons of other activities like ATV rentals, horseback or camel riding, kite flying, picnics and locals enjoying the view!
Chaats: Traditional snacks or chaats is a must-try while visiting Karachi, especially on a street food tour! We came to Mirchili to try several chaats we had never tried before, but always wanted to. Golgappa was the first chaat we tried, which are small, hollow puri that are filled with chickpeas and a tamarind/spicy water that you scoop into the puri. Our second chaat was dahi puri, containing yogurt, sweet chutney, papri, chickpeas and boiled potatoes stuffed into puri. We also tried the gappa gotala which is an interesting creation of exploding colours: different vegetables, chutneys and toppings.
Fire Paan: Paan is widely used as a mouth freshener, with tons of natural ingredients. It is really enjoyable to have after eating tons of street food. To make it more interesting, some vendors light the paan on fire and shove it into your mouth. We visited Panwaari, which specializes in paan and is well-known for good hygiene practices.
Kata-Kat: Known in Lahore as Taka-tak, this street food is not for the faint of heart. Various offal are thrown on a griddle with spices, herbs and tomatoes and are chopped together with two blades in a musical rhythm, which gives the street food its unique name kata-kat. We tried the kata-kat from Noorani Kabab House, and it was very spicy, and full of different textures.
Kolachi: A visit to Karachi would not be complete without a visit to Kolachi Restaurant. This place has an amazing ambience, with outdoor seating overlooking the sea. It is a beautifully constructed restaurant, and it serves a variety of Pakistani dishes, as well as other cuisines. Every dish we tried was outstanding, and we especially loved their karahi, makhani handi and cheese naan. This was the perfect way to end our incredible food trip around Pakistan.
Avari Towers: In Karachi, we stayed at the Avari Towers. Our room had gorgeous views over Karachi, and was the perfect location to reach all of the delicious restaurants we visited during our stay in Karachi. We highly recommend staying here during your trip to Karachi.
