Little Bit Correction: Osama Bin Laden's Death: 2011 May 2 , i Said 2013. The Taliban, which refers to itself as the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, is a Deobandi Islamist religious-political movement and military organization in Afghanistan, regarded by multiple governments and organizations as terrorists. Leaders Mohammed Omar # (founder, 1994–2013) Abdul Ghani Baradar (co-founder) Akhtar Mansour † (2015–2016) Hibatullah Akhundzada (2016–present) Dates of operation 1994–1996 (militia) 1996–2001 (1st government) 2002–2021 (insurgency) 2021–present (2nd government) Group(s) Primarily Pashtuns;[1][2] some Tajiks in northern Afghanistan[3] Headquarters Kandahar, Afghanistan (1994–2001) Mujahideen, Arabic mujāhidūn (“those engaged in jihad”), singular mujāhid, in its broadest sense, Muslims who fight on behalf of the faith or the Muslim community (ummah). Its Arabic singular, mujāhid, was not an uncommon personal name from the early Islamic period onward. A military offensive by the Taliban and allied militant groups against the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and its allies began on 1 May 2021,[75][76][16] coinciding with the withdrawal of most United States and allied troops from Afghanistan.[77] In the first three months of the offensive the Taliban made significant advances in the countryside, increasing the number of districts it controlled from 73 to 223.[17] On 6 August, the Taliban launched an assault on the provincial capitals of Afghanistan, with most of the towns surrendering without a fight,[78] and they captured all provincial capitals except Bazarak.[79][80][81] On 15 August, the incumbent President, Ashraf Ghani fled the country,[82] and the Taliban captured the Afghan capital Kabul; thus, the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan's government fell.[83] The Taliban's rapid takeover[76][84] surprised many governments, including the United States,[85] United Kingdom,[86] Germany[87] and Russia.[88] The Taliban victory has widespread domestic and international ramifications.[89] The MCC compact with Nepal marks a new chapter in the U.S.-Nepal Partnership. MCC’s Nepal Compact is designed to increase the availability of electricity and lower the cost of transportation in Nepal. These investments will help the Government of Nepal better deliver critical services to its people, ease the movement of goods around the country, and open up new opportunities for private investment. Strengthening the reliability of key infrastructure will put the country’s economy on a firmer growth trajectory, advance stability, support regional security, and reduce poverty. An additional $130 million from the Government of Nepal in support of the compact − the highest up-front contribution from a partner country − enables MCC’s investment to have an even greater impact.
