The end screen did not fit the tips so I put them here : Whenever I have shot cabrilla over 25 pounds, it happened in similar conditions and I used the same technique : Conditions were : 1- Low visibility. 2- Very few fish other than the groupers. 3- Ghostly leopard groupers shadows hovering high over boulders, sometimes in the middle of the water column (instead of closer to the bottom). Technique : 1- Go down to the bottom and stand, kneel or lay behind a large boulder. 2- Look over the boulder towards the sun to see far away fish (if you see the groupers close to the bottom this technique will not work). 3- Stay put, let the fish get curious, try grunting or slapping bands. 4- Leopard groupers are unlikely to swim within range, but they often stay put and let you carefully move towards them if they are curious enough. Do not move your fins if you can (I had to since it was so far). Keep a low profile and have quiet thoughts. 5- Using a long speargun (130 - 150 cm speargun), a very well tuned one you know shoots straight at long distances, take the shot at the end of your lunge. Don't shoot unless you are certain of the outcome. This is not meant to be a hail Mary. If the fish is not over the boulders, then you'll have to revert to the traditional way : 1- Lay down low on the sand behind rocks, 2- Look between two rock with a narrow opening (no more than 1 meter works for me). 3- Don't move for a long time and hope they swim in front of you. This works. Moving all over the place will not. Leopard groupers are curious, but they might make you wait a while.
